Department of History & Social Studies

The Department of History & Social Studies provides courses in History, Geography, Philosophy, and Political Science in order to help meet the needs of students completing General Education Requirements as well as those majoring in these various disciplines. The Department is committed to helping students grow and develop reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills needed in each discipline as well as in life. Many disciplines also offer internships and co-op work experience opportunities that provide students with real world work experience.

Dr. Alan K. Lamm, Professor of History & Department Chair

A.S. Mount Olive College, B.A. University of North Carolina at Greensboro, M.Div. Duke University, Th.M Duke University, Ph.D University of South Carolina. Dr. Lamm is a former U.S. Army Chaplain who specializes in military and religious history. He has published  numerous book reviews and journal articles and a book entitled, Five Black Preachers in Army Blue, 1884-1901: The Buffalo Soldier Chaplains.

Dr. Jerry Sheppard, Associate Professor of History & Education

B.A. Southwestern Oklahoma State University, M.S. George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University, M.E. Southwestern State University, Ph.D. Texas Tech University.   Dr. Sheppard specializes in American Western history, European history, and Social Studies teacher education. Dr. Sheppard is also the sponsor for the MOC History Club.

Ken Dilda, Associate Professor of History

B.A. East Carolina University, M.A. East Carolina University.  Mr. Dilda specializes in Southern history, political science, and museum studies.  He is also the Director of the David John Aaron Museum in Mount Olive, NC.

Scholarships & Awards

Claude Hunter Moore History Award

A scholarship in memory of Claude Hunter Moore, Professor Emeritus, who taught history at Mount Olive College from 1969-1981. The award is given to a returning history major selected by the history faculty as showing the most promise in the field.
