Alicia Mote Named Conference Carolinas Player Of The Week
Alicia Mote, who captured match-high honors in kills in each of Mount Olive’s three conference matches last week, has been named Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week. Mote’s selection marks the second time in three weeks a Trojan player has won the award.
Mote, a 5-9 senior outside hitter from Miami, Fla., recorded a season-high 21 kills to go with 11 digs in Mount Olive’s four-set win on the road at St. Andrews. Mote also notched a double-double in the Trojans’ five-set win over Queens with 16 kills and 11 digs. In Mount Olive’s only conference loss of the season, Mote led all players with 14 kills against Pfeiffer. Mote has reached double figures in kills in each of her last six matches, including four double-doubles (kills and digs).
Mount Olive (8-13 overall, 8-1 Conference Carolinas) was the last remaining unbeaten team in conference play before Friday’s loss. The Trojans are currently in a tie for second place in the conference standings, only a half-game out of the lead. Mount Olive is off to its best conference start since 2005 when the Trojans won their first 10 conference matches.
Mote joins teammate Racey Bartley among this season’s player of the week winners. Both Mote and Bartley won player of the week honors during the 2008 season.
Mount Olive travels to South Carolina this weekend for a pair of Conference Carolinas matches. The Trojans go to Anderson Friday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of the championship game of last year’s Conference Carolinas Tournament. Saturday, Mount Olive heads to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine for the first time in more than a decade. Erskine reinstated women’s volleyball this year after the school discontinued the sport in 1997. Match time is 2 p.m.
