Trojans Fall To Anderson 3-0
In a rematch of last year’s conference tournament championship, Mount Olive fell to Anderson 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Friday at Anderson, S.C. Alicia Mote shared match-high honors with 12 kills. The loss was only the Trojans’ second this season in conference play.
Mount Olive (8-14 overall, 8-2 Conference Carolinas) trailed by as many as seven points in the first set and never recovered. The Trojans pulled within 21-18, but Anderson (11-8, 6-4) scored the final four points of the set.
Mount Olive had to play from behind again in the second set after Anderson built a 13-7 lead. Caitlin Skislak sparked a rally with kills on back-to-back points and Mote’s kill pulled the Trojans within 17-14. But that was as close as Mount Olive would get. The Trojans fought off two set points before Anderson went on to build a two-set lead.
Mount Olive got off to a quick start in the third set as Christiane Maul's block and kill helped the Trojans jump out to an 8-4 advantage. Anderson rallied to tie the set 9-9. There were seven ties and four lead changes before Anderson took the lead for good at 18-17. Mote’s kill drew Mount Olive within 23-22, but Anderson scored the final two points to seal the win.
Joanie Werling finished with 25 assists for Mount Olive, while Maul paced the Trojans defensively with 11 digs.
Jamie Lancaster had 12 kills for Anderson, while Lindsay Doggett had 25 assists.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine in a Conference Carolinas match-up. The match is the first between the two teams since 1996. Erskine reinstated women’s volleyball this year after a 13-year absence. Match time is 2 p.m.
